7 Strategies for an Easy Move

Moving can be a daunting task, filled with endless to-dos, heavy lifting, and the emotional stress of leaving one place for another. However, with a little planning and some strategic tips, you can transform your moving day from a chaotic ordeal into a smooth transition.

Here are seven tips and tricks to make your move as easy and stress-free as possible.

Keep the excitement in and the stress out of your next move.

1. Start Early and Plan Ahead

The key (get it?) to a successful move is to start planning early. Begin by creating a moving checklist at least two months before your move date. This list should include tasks such as notifying utility companies and securing a storage unit or moving truck (we’ve used Uhaul for both of these). Having a clear timeline will help you stay organized and reduce last-minute stress.

2. Declutter and Downsize

Moving is the perfect opportunity to declutter your home. Go through each room and decide what you truly need and what can be donated or discarded. Not only will this reduce the number of items you need to pack, but it will also give you a fresh start in your new home. Consider hosting a garage sale or donating items to charity to lighten your load.

Habitat for Humanity ReStores or GoodWill are both great donation spots!

3. Gather Quality Packing Supplies

Investing in quality packing supplies can make a big difference in the ease of your move. This is especially true if you’re moving a long distance. Stock up on sturdy boxes in various sizes, bubble wrap, packing paper, and strong packing tape. Don’t forget to label your boxes with their contents and the room they belong to. This will make unpacking much more straightforward.

Pro Tip: if you want to re-use your boxes down the road, label them on the tape, not the box itself. That way, once it’s opened, it’ll be fresh and you won’t end up with boxes that look like, Kitchen Sally’s Room Den Books

4. Pack Strategically

When it comes to packing, strategy is key. Start with the items you use least frequently, such as seasonal clothing and holiday decorations. Empty your storage spaces. Pack one room at a time and label each box clearly (on the tape!). Create an “essentials” suitcase for each family member with items they will need immediately upon arrival, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, and electronics (don’t forget chargers!)

Planning your move ahead of time will save time, money and energy.

5. Hire Professional Movers

While it may be tempting to save money by moving everything yourself, hiring professional movers can save you time, effort, and potential injury. Research moving companies, read reviews, and get quotes from multiple providers. Professional movers have the experience and equipment to handle your belongings safely and efficiently. We have a list of trusted professionals exclusively for our clients!

6. Take Care of Utilities and Address Changes Early

Avoid the stress of arriving at your new home without electricity or internet by arranging for utility services to be transferred or set up ahead of time. Additionally, update your address with important institutions such as banks, insurance providers, and the postal service. Setting up mail forwarding with the post office can ensure you don’t miss any important correspondence.

7. Stay Positive and Flexible

Moving can be an emotional experience, so it’s important to stay positive and flexible. Expect some hiccups along the way and be prepared to adapt. Keep a positive attitude and remind yourself of the exciting new opportunities that await in your new home.

And there you have it. Moving doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. By starting early, staying organized, and implementing these tips, you’ll be well on your way to a seamless transition to your new home. Remember, the key is to stay organized, plan ahead, and keep a positive mindset.

We hope you have a happy and successful move!
